Support available for families with a child under 5 years old

We are pleased to have been awarded funding from the Scottish Power Energy People Trust to give energy advice to families in Bradford who have a child under 5 years old. We are targeting 15 Children’s Centres and can offer the following:

Sign-up sessions for the Warm Home Discount scheme

The Warm Home Discount scheme is a government scheme through which energy suppliers give eligible households a grant of £140 towards their winter energy bills. The exact criteria vary across different energy suppliers but generally if your household is less than £16,010 per year and you have a child under 5 then you will be eligible. We held 6 sessions at Children’s Centres over winter 2014/15 and helped 157 households apply for the £140, bringing in £21,980. We will be doing more when schemes have re-opened in September 2015.

Home energy visits

During a one-hour home energy visit we can:

  • Advise on the cheapest energy supplier for your household
  • Help you apply for the £140 Warm Home Discount payment (if you meet the eligibility criteria)
  • Signpost you towards schemes for free loft and cavity wall insulation and replacement boilers (if yours is over 10 years old or broken)
  • Help install low cost energy saving measures such as low energy lightbulbs, draught excluders or radiator foils
  • Help you understand heating controls
  • Provide general energy saving tips and information
These are available through referral by frontline staff at the Children’s Centre only.

Training for Children’s Centre staff

We will be providing training to frontline staff at the Children’s Centres to equip workers with the skills and expertise to be able to support their most vulnerable families.
